In the Economist article Proftoft* linked to a few posts ago, it seemed to me that the author was suggesting that the "North" was in danger of switching places with the "South" in regards to economic vitality and Debt-to-GDP ratio, and that the BRIC nations had become midwives for the current mutated iteration of the traditional core-periphery relationship between the West and the "Rest".Together we will explore the politics, economics and culture of what was once termed the "third world" in global comparative perspective. We will at once attend to international structures and institutions and local forms of resistance, governance and trade. We will address the themes of post-colonialism and economic development in a way that is reflective rather than normative, assessing how patterns of interaction have underwritten past, present and future dynamics in the world system.

Predictions on the next world-system and the BRIC nations' sort of Joker-like role in its creation
